Working a full-time job is hectic as it is, but what about when you throw parenting, and school into the mix? Crazy right? Almost sounds impossible… But it’s not. It’s doable. In fact, when you put in the work, your career as a freelance writer will take off so far that you won’t even need that fulltime job anymore. Why not? Because you’ll be working from home for yourself. Watching your kids grow up, finishing school with good grades, and have enjoyment doing what you love for a living.
With a healthy work ethic and a driven attitude, you can achieve working a full-time job while being a freelance writer. Sticking to deadlines and following through with a weekly schedule will help you execute.
Have goals for your freelance business
Having a plan in place is the surest way to stay focused while managing your freelance business. Setting weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals are actionable steps to stay on track with finances. Don’t fall behind with filing for the IRS, no one likes to owe.
Set aside time for your freelance business
Keeping a daily planner to keep tabs on daily task is perfect to manage your time better. Be serious about your work ethic and remain consistent. Make a list of what your normal routine is, then review and see what activities consume and waste time. There are 24 hours in a day, how you manage your time and what you make time for will make or break your business.
Create a comfortable workspace
It’s hard to write when you aren’t focused. Having a quite organized workspace will encourage you to work peacefully and effectively.
It’s ok to take breaks
Stop working five hours straight, on an empty stomach drinking coffee all day. Your eyes need to rest, your hands need to take a break from typing. Your body and brain need a break. Just don’t quit. Work 2 hours and take a 10-minute break. Get some fresh air, close your eyes, and stretch for a bit. When you’re working and heavily tired you won’t produce the best work. Take a 30-minute nap if you need to. Get recharged and refocused.
Stop wasting your time
How you spend your day is what you make of it. If you spend time watching The Kardashians all day eating and laying on the couch the only thing you gain is weight and time lost. Be active and stay busy. Spend time being productive working and learning new things that are beneficial for the business.
Working two jobs and performing at your best doesn’t have to be hard. It only becomes hard when you put yourself in a position to fail such as, not holding yourself accountable, not being responsible, and not managing your time. Planning out your day along with time management, and consistency will keep your business in business. Check out the planner I use to keep me focused and on track throughout the day here.
