10 Reasons to start your Freelance Writing Business

Here are 10 reasons to start your freelance writing business already. If you’re reading this post, I take it you’ve had it up to here working for somebody else. Only one or two days off a week, long hours, missed time with family, and customers think you sleep in the back. Not to mention (for those who work in customer service) dealing with the public who’s not always so nice, or maybe you have a couple coworkers or a boss whose always on your ass. It’s annoying walking into chaos every day you get to work. Especially when you never have time to work out, or eat a healthy meal because you’re always go, go going.

Since the pandemic the typical job of leaving the house sitting in traffic for hours, working a 9 to 5 and coming home has changed. After most of the country being shut down for about a year, businesses were forced to provide services online. This made an increased need for writers worldwide. The average pay for self-paid freelance writer’s working remotely is $67,120 as of May 2020. With the top 10% making more than $133,000 a year from home.

You don’t need much to get your business up and running other than a laptop, wi-fi, spellcheck, email address, and a passion for writing. If you’ve checked off the necessities, then I know you’re showing these 10 reasons why you’re ready.

  1. You’ve stashed a savings

If employed now, know that when you leave your job you won’t make the same amount of income right away. You have to have patience and consistency before you are seeing serious results. Having a savings account to support you the next couple of months until things are up and running this is the perfect way to dedicate your time scaling and measuring your business for its newfound success.

2. The thought of going into work makes you sick

Getting up for work every day you feel nauseated and just want to be glued to the bed. The thought of going in brings a heavy sickness, making you annoyed, and not wanting to work to your full potential.

3. You avoid company gatherings

You’re no longer interested in attending company events or team meetings because you have it made up in your mind you won’t be there much longer.

4. Always writing business plans

All day long you write at work about business ideas and plans you would love to implement for your own business, but never have time because you’re buried to your neck in building someone else’s million-dollar business. Don’t shy away from your ideas. Just as much as the company you worked for liked and implemented all your suggestions, they too will be a hit for your own business.

5. You’re Organized

To run a successful business, you must be organized. This can’t be stressed enough. When managing clients and you fall behind with deadlines, or can’t produce the quality work you agreed upon, you will ruin your reputation. Stay organized with a monthly planner digitally or physically. Check out a free daily printable I use.

6. Consistency is your thing

Lack of consistency will be the only thing that keeps your business from flourishing. Literally, that simple. If you aren’t announcing to the world on a regular basis that you exist no one will find out. Your audience is going to love your work, so keep giving them constant content to keep them coming back for more. Keep content fresh, lively and updated as much as possible. An audience likes a writer they can identify themselves with. Posting on your blog 1 to 4 times a week is best for a 1-person marketing team and a great way to grow your portfolio to work with other clients.

7. You enjoy working on your own time

Working for someone else you’re working on their time by their rules. Have freedom when owning and running your own freelance business from home. Let clients know your turnarounds up front so they know what to expect.

8. The commute to work is stressful

Traffic driving anywhere is a pain when it takes 55 minutes to drive 14 miles. Or 2 hours to drive 38 miles. The average American is said to spend an hour in traffic daily. Minimize that hour of traffic and maximize your time with getting a workout routine back on track, having time to eat a decent meal, or meditate. Never forget about your mental health when growing your wealth.

9. You like learning new things

As a business owner you’ll always be learning something new. Besides, it is important to know the ends an out regardless, so you aren’t taken advantage of when closing deals or making financial decisions for the business.

10. Writing is your passion

If you don’t love writing, you won’t love being a freelance writer, because writing is an important part of what you do. As a freelance writer you will be busy with putting a variety of content from email blast, to landing pages, blog articles, and more. Being well rounded is a plus.

Questioning why, I didn’t mention a website being a necessity after reading this, it’s because it isn’t. But having a website will help bring credibility and awareness to your business bringing you more clients, closing bigger deals. Find more benefits to owning your own website here.
